Hi, I’m Kari. I spend my time dreaming and doing by giving life to new ideas. With over 18 years in the beauty industry, my calling has always been in the visual arts. Beyond my work as a makeup artist and bridal beauty expert, I started to take notice when new ideas would multiply and jump out at me anytime I stepped foot into a dark room or theater. I have been practicing photography and filmmaking since the 90’s but never really got the chance to perfect my craft until a few years ago when my family decided to make a big change.
“Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love.
It will not lead you astray.” – Rumi
Four years ago, I had an idea.
My husband had his normal, day to day routine; Monday through Friday, 12-hour workdays. I was doing makeup and looking after our two kids, Addison and Gage. The idea grew the more I thought about it. Could we live a life we love by living with less so I could build a career that honored my true passion?
It was a risk – one we considered and debated for an entire year. I was looking for creative freedom. I wondered if my photographs were good. I wanted to know that my ideas and dreams could have a chance of being enjoyed by others. My husband was looking for an opportunity to reset and explore his career options. Ultimately, he agreed to quit his job and become the primary caregiver for our kids so I could pursue this dream.
Today, Gagewood is the expression of my life’s work, and my way of connecting with you through the love of photographs, films, and art. Working with you is my big idea, realized, in living color.
Artists are great at following curiosity and I’m no exception. Questions worth answering are done so through action. Creating is a verb.
About the Blog
My story proves I’m a firm believer that ideas should be explored. The Gagewood blog is where I can share and showcase them. This will be an ever-changing, evolving space, free of any strategy or objective beyond the cultivation of more new ideas to foster. When I learn something new, I can’t wait to teach you. When I see something beautiful, I want you to see it too. If I meet cool people, I must introduce you. This blog is inspiration in whatever form or mood it presents itself through my work.
